Frequently Asked Questions

Wash & Fold FAQs:

  • I’m interested in your service, tell me more!

    Our standard protocol is to wash everything in free & clear detergent which is hypoallergenic and safe for sensitive skin, including babies and pets. All laundry is sorted by color and stain treated, then washed in warm water and tumble tried using a gentle medium heat cycle. If you have different preferences, our process is entirely customizable—we have options for additional treatments including scent beads, light scent beads (safe for moderately reactive skin), free and clear fabric softener, scented or unscented dryer sheets, oxiclean, vinegar, dawn, bleach, baking soda, and different temperature options for the washing and drying cycles. All items are then uniformly folded and bagged up until you receive them back.

    Along with that, we offer pickup and delivery through third-party services for your convenience incase you are unable to make it into the laundry lounge during our Wash & Fold business hours!

    Wash & Fold for laundry and towels is priced at $1.99/lb, but we currently have introductory pricing, which brings that down to $1/lb. Customers who establish recurring services with us during our introductory period will be locked in at a lower price as our thanks for growing with us!

    Larger items like comforters and blankets are charged separately, and each order for a comforter includes up to two sheets and two pillowcases at no additional charge. The current prices are as follows:

    King- $15

    Queen- $12

    Twin- $10

    Throw Blanket- $5

    Pillow- $5

  • How do I know if I need laundry services? What’s an average weekly order?

    Our service are for EVERYONE! Do you wear clothes? Do you have bedding? If so (we hope you do!), our services are for you! Whether you're a busy parent, you struggle with mental or physical disabilities, you don't have your own washer & dryer, or you simply don't enjoy/have time for laundry, we're here for you! We have a wide demographic of customers, from college students, to working professionals, overwhelmed parents, to retired people who just want to relax! Most of our clients bring all of their laundry in weekly, which ranges from 20-100lbs! Whether you want to eliminate doing your own laundry entirely, or you just want us to help you catch up or clean your bedding & blankets-- we're happy to help with any and all of your  laundry needs!

  • How quickly should I unpack my cleaned order?

    We recommend unbagging your items ASAP. This is especially important for duvets and down comforters.

    Due to humid temps and the goose feathers, it can be difficult to completely dry large bedding. There is always the possibility they may need more time to air dry at home.

  • Do I need to weigh my items before pickup?

    No, we will do that for you. If you are wanting an estimate, you can use your scale by weighing yourself and then weighing yourself holding the laundry. The weight of your clothing is taken at the lounge using our trade certified scale.

  • Where should I put my pickup/delivery order?

    Your pick up/drop off location should be a safe and secure location where you feel comfortable leaving your personal items. While this is different for everyone, customers often leave their orders at their front door, on their porch, or inside a secure, gated area. Please note that drivers are not able to enter any privately owned spaces or residences, so they are not able to enter your home, apartment, car, garage, etc.

  • How do I know my clothes aren’t getting washed with other people’s laundry?

    Orders are never put in the same bag, basket, or machine as another order. We process one order at a time.

  • How do you process laundry? Do I need to prepare it in any way?

    First, all large items are separated from your laundry. Clothes & towels are then sorted by color to reduce risk of color bleeding, turned right-side out to ensure maximum surface cleaning, and then checked for stains & items in pockets. All laundry is washed in warm water with Free & Clear Gentle detergent, and then tumble dried on medium heat with dryer sheets to prevent static. If you have any brand new denim or bright colored clothing we suggest you give them their first wash at home or separate them and let us know. We can wash individual items alone for a minimum fee of $5. If you would like us to use scent boosters, fabric softener, borax, or bleach you may select those options at checkout. We are also able to wash items in hot or cold water, or tumble dry on a lower heat setting.

  • I have allergies/sensitive skin/skin concerns, what if I react to my laundry?

    All orders are washed in Free & Clear Detergent, which is hypoallergenic & safe for all skin types (even babies & pets!). We also offer free & clear fabric softener & dryer sheets, vinegar, unscented laundry booster (OxiClean), & even Downy Light scent beads so your clothes can smell extra fresh without irritating your sensitive skin!

    If you have severely sensitive skin or allergies, please let us know. Our machines are cleaned & sanitized before all orders,, but we are a public laundromat. If you are prone to severe reactions from detergents, we would be happy to do a sanitizing rinse cycle before processing your order to ensure no heavy chemicals or possible skin irritants are left behind.

    (The Downy Light scent beads are not hypoallergenic,but they are fre from dyes, phosphates, & heavy perfumes, which makes them safe for mild to moderately sensitive skin.)

  • Should I send my own detergent and laundry products?

    Nope- we provide everything you could need for laundry day, you just provide the laundry! Wheather you have allergies & sensitive skin or prefer extra scented laundry, we are confident that you will find the perfect combination of available products for your laundry with us!

  • How much is your laundry service? What is the average cost for wash & fold?

    A normal sized laundry basket holds about 10-15lbs of laundry, our price for wash & fold is $1.99/lb. This includes clothing, towels, & washcloths. Also check out our pricing page, which includes rates for larger items charged per item.

  • Can I send undergarments?

    Of course, it’s laundry! Let us take ALLLLL your laundry off your hands!

    Clients that prefer to keep their undergarments private may send them inside a mesh laundry bag along with a note requesting we wash, dry & return the undergarments in your mesh bag.

  • I’ve never had a laundry service, what should I expect for my first time?

    On the day/evening of your scheduled pick-up, a DoorDash/Uber driver will arrive sometime in the allotted window of time.

    You must have your items gathered & ready in a bag(s) of your choice (garbage bags, reusable, etc., please do not send multiple rigid hampers/bins).

    **When gathering your laundry, please note that we will do our best to find any stains needing treated, flip items right side out, check pockets, and only wash items with like colors— however, we are not responsible for any color bleeding, staining, shrinkage, damage caused by or loss of items left in pockets, or damage to sensitive garments that are not to be laundered.**

    The next business day, your driver will bring everything back to you during your confirmed delivery time. A text will be sent when your clothes are en route and again, once your delivery has been made.

  • Is there anything you won’t wash?

    At this time, there are a handful of items that we cannot accept for cleaning due to the nature of the item or the risk they may pose to our team. We cannot accept the following items for cleaning:

     Certain non-clothing items (These specific non-clothing items often require a specialized cleaning process that we are not equipped to provide as clothing care experts):

    • Curtains
    • Commercial linens
    • Sofa covers
    • Rugs

      Contaminated Items (We cannot accept items that may pose a risk to the safety of our team and/or the items of other customers cleaned in the same facility. These include items that have been contaminated with):

    • Tar
    • Mold
    • Mildew
    • Bedbugs
    • Poison ivy or poison oak oils
    • Hazardous chemical residue

      Specialty Care Items (These clothing items require specialty care that falls outside of our area of expertise):

    • Wedding dresses
    • Vintage clothes (in some cases)
    • Costumes
    • Hats/Headwear
    • Shoes
    • Fur & Animal products (feathers, fur coats)
    • Purses/handbags
  • I’ve seen people with huge, durable Mel’s Laundry Lounge Totes, how do I get one?!

    Every wash & fold customer gets one free  XL convenient carry bag, if you are interested in more than one please contact us.

  • Do I need to sort my items, such as dark and lights from whites?

    No, this is supposed to make laundry EASY! Leave the sorting to us! If you would like your whites separated & washed alone with bleach, please note that. If there are not enough white items to fill our smallest washer a $5 minimum cycle fee may apply.

  • Is everything included in the wash & fold price? What about large, bulky items?

    In some cases there are larger items that are charged on a per item basis. Primarily, these items include:

    * Bedding: $15-$35*

    * Blanket: $10

    * Sleeping bag: $15

    * Pillow: $10

    * Pet bed: $10

    * Oversized Item: $25**

    The reason we charge separately for these items is because they require washing and drying seperately from the rest of your order. Comforters in particular take several hours to dry on low-heat setting, which is why it’s an industry standard to charge them at a higher rate.

     * “Bedding” means a comforter, duvet, quilt, or mattress pad. Each bedding purchase can include up to 2 pillow cases, a fitted sheet, & a flat sheet. If you do not bring sheets or pillow cases the cost is the same. If you bring sheets or pillow cases without the comforter prices may vary.

     ** Oversized items include body pillows, cushions, stuffed animals, etc. We DO NOT wash large furniture cushions.

  • When will my laundry be done?

    We guarantee 48 hour turnaround time, but orders less than 60lbs are typically ready the next business day.  If you choose express service the order must be in before 10am to be ready same-day, if you choose express & we receive your order after 10am your items may not be ready until the following business day. Limited express slots are available to ensure fast turnaround.

  • Do you have pickup and delivery options? Am I on your route?

    We do have pickup and delivery through a third-party, our range for delivery is unlimited, but fees vary depending on your distance from our location.

  • Do you do dry cleaning?

    NO. We are not dry cleaners, please ensure any garments labeled “dry clean only” are taken to the dry cleaner for specific care. Normal laundering of said items can cause damage to the textiles.

  • Can you do stain removal?

    Of course! We do light stain removal. We do check each garment as we sort your laundry, but do not guarantee to find each individual mark. If you know of any tough stains please place the stained item in a separate bag and let us know by including a note in the bag or on your laundry profile and we’ll do our best to get it out. It is very useful to know the exact source of each stain, since the best treatment will vary by the type of stain and the fabric type. While we’re usually successful at removing stains, we can’t guarantee we’ll be able to get it out. If you can pretreat the stains before putting the garment in the bag, it will increase the odds of success.

  • Do you wash rugs?

    Depending on the size/type, yes. However, due to the size & rubber backing,  most rugs could cause serious damage to our machines.

  • How do you care for sweaters, dresses, and dress clothes? Can you hang or iron my slacks?

    We do not offer hang-drying, ironing, or steaming. If you would like your items washed or dried on a different setting please separate the item & make a note of your preferences. All items will be folded & bagged with other laundry, we do not guarantee against wrinkles or runs & do not offer hand washing or dry cleaning.

  • Is Mel’s a franchise?

    Mel’s Laundry Lounge is NOT a franchise. We are a woman-owned & operated, local small business. Our company was founded by Melanie, a busy momma of three who recognized a need for this service in the Happy Valley area. Daily operations are run with the help of Melanie’s sidekick, Katie, who actually used to do Mel’s laundry in-home! As contradictory as it may sound, we aren't huge fans of laundry and know we aren't alone!
